The son of a farmer and a store keeper in Talibon town in Bohol has received a full ride scholarship to Amherst College in Massachusetts, USA, one of the most prestigious colleges in the world.

Gelbert Crescencio dreamed of becoming a neuroscientist and neurosurgeon so he persevered to attend his dream college — Amherst College in Massachusetts, USA.

Gelbert’s ambition began when his grandfather passed away due to Alzheimer’s.

According to Gelbert, he wants to make a device that can detect the early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Because of the hardships of life, Gelbert knew that his family could not afford to pay for his education.

Gelbert’s mother Gertrudes is a staff at a store in Talibon town, while his father Edilberto is a farmer who works on the sidelines as a tricycle driver.

He is youngest of three sons.

So, after graduating from senior high school at Holy Name University taking up Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand, Gelbert worked along with applying to Amherst College.

Of the nearly five thousand who applied worldwide, he was among 118 who were awarded full scholarships. This is equivalent to more than P4 million in financial aid, including free food and shelter in America.
