TAGBILARAN CITY— President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has signed into law a measure extending the term of office of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials to five years and moving the next Barangay and SK Elections (BSKE) to November 2028.
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero, the principal author of the measure in the Senate, said the new law would provide greater stability and certainty in barangay governance.
Escudero said the reform was intended to establish a clearer and more consistent cycle of governance at the barangay level, noting that barangay officials serve as the government’s frontline in delivering public services.
“When terms are properly structured, public service can also be delivered more effectively,” Escudero said in a statement.
Escudero thanked Marcos for the prompt signing of Republic Act No. 12326, as well as senators and members of the House of Representatives for supporting the measure.
He said the law is intended to promote more stable, efficient and equitable governance in the country’s barangays.
