TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol — The man who was gunned down in Tagbilaran City on Saturday morning, June 28, was once featured on national Tv after his sons were spreading joy through song.
Rodelito Tanio, 42, rose to online fame alongside his sons – Jr and Jundel- as Bohol’s beloved “singing duo.” They gained attention for serenading passengers inside public utility vehicles with heartfelt acoustic performances. Their impromptu renditions delighted commuters and netizens alike, earning them a feature on GMA’s Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS) — a national recognition that highlighted their humble charm and musical talent.
Tanio told KMJS that he taught his sons how to play the guitar.
That same man was tragically shot dead in front of his home in Purok 7, Barangay Bool, while lovingly cradling his two-week-old grandchild.
According to the Tagbilaran City Police Station, Tanio sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and died on the spot. The infant he was holding was miraculously unharmed.
Eyewitnesses said two men riding a blue-and-white Yamaha Mio scooter arrived outside Basillote’s residence at around 7:10 a.m. Both suspects were wearing black jackets, blue jeans, and full-face helmets.
The back-rider reportedly dismounted, approached Basillote, drew a handgun, and fired a single shot at point-blank range before fleeing with the driver toward Barangay Dampas, exiting the city.
Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Yap condemned the killing and described it as an “isolated case.” She assured the public that the local government is closely coordinating with authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“I have already directed the city police to pursue every lead. We will not stop until justice is served,” Yap said.
A hot-pursuit operation has been launched by the city police, supported by mobile patrol units and the SWAT team. Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage and appealing to the public for any information that could help identify the suspects.
Tanio’s untimely death has shocked many, especially those who fondly remember him as the cheerful man with a guitar.
