The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday expressed its condolences to the family of the eight learners who died in a road crash in Boljoon, Cebu.

The DepEd added the victims were on a mini dump truck, together with 31 other learners, two teachers, a parent from Nangka and San Antonio Elementary Schools.

A report from the Boljoon, Cebu police station said a mini dump truck owned by the Boljoon municipal government was traveling along Barangay Nangka when the vehicle’s brakes stopped working.

Police said the truck lost its brakes, and the driver, Daniel Niere, attempted to bring the vehicle to an uphill area to stop it, but the vehicle turned on its side and fell into a ravine in Barangay Upper Becerril.

Eight students from Nangka and San Antonio Elementary Schools and a woman died on the spot, according to police.

Police said the dump truck which is owned by the local government of Boljoon was supposed to pick up students on their way to join a parade for a district athletic meet and meet other students  in Barangay Upper Becerril when the truck reportedly lost its brakes as it went downhill.

Mayor Merlou Derama said teachers requested to use the mini dump truck to transport the students for the meet. He added it was the usual procedure, since there was no other vehicle available for the upland barangay students.

Boljoon is around 106 kilometers south of the capital Cebu City.
