Go check San Miguel Pale Pilsen official Facebook page and you’ll beam with pride. The largest selling beer in the Philippines and Hong Kong has a cool post celebrating July as a Sandugo month in Bohol province.
“Cheers para sa Sandugo (to Sandugo)! Cheers sa atong mga igsoon nga Bol-anon! (to our Boholano brothers and sisters)” it says on its post on Sunday, June 30.
“Ayaw kalimot padala ug litrato ha (Don’t forget to send your photo),” it adds.
The doodle shows Bohol’s Rajah Si Katuna and Spanish explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi having a blood compact (Sanduguan). In history, they made a cut on their left arm with a dagger and poured their blood into a cup filled with wine, which they both drank in honor of their friendship. But instead of holding cups, the two were holding bottles of beer to celebrate their friendship.
The Sandugo Festival is an annual historical celebration every July to honor the treaty of friendship of Si Katuna and Legazpi which took place on March 16, 1565.
The month-long celebration includes Trade-Agri Food Fair, nightly entertainment, and search for Miss Bohol Sandugo and the street parade with a street dancing competition and the re-enactment of the Blood Compact.
